Joseph Campbell (1904 - 1987) was an American mythology professor, writer, and orator best known for his work in the fields of comparative mythology and comparative religion. He wrote the mythology and story classic "The Hero with a Thousand Faces", and was interviewed by Bill Myers in the PBS special, "The Power of Myth". Among many other accomplishments, Campbell was the principal story consultant for George Lucas' "Star Wars" original trilogy. I believe that it was Campbell's contribution to Star Wars, namely the universal mythic and human archetypes he wove into the story, that made "Star Wars" resonate so powerfully in people and made it such a potent experience and financial success, the likes of which have never been seen before or since.
